Course content
Topics: 1. First week. Introductions. Slide show of Olomouc in recreation. Definition of recreation, leisure, play. Outdoor recreation. Benefits of recreation, leisure, play. Focus on leisure philosophy. Chapters 1, 2 of Goodale and Godbey. Issue of no textbook - go to the library and use the materials there, mainly journals and magazines, also internet. Introduce topic of recreation and leisure around the world. (Homework come up with your own definition of recreation, leisure, and play. Find some article such as on google, about Benefits of Recreation, and benefits of outdoor recreation bring to class a written summary of this and be willing to present. Write a summary of recreation and leisure in your country.) Begin definition of terms. Go over and be clear about assignments and class work. Plan recreation activity to do by third week. White paper. 2. Second week. Focus more on recreation. Benefits of recreation. What is your definition of recreation and leisure? Recreation and leisure in your country. Discussion of recreation around the world (Chapter 8 or Cordes and Ibrahim.) Present idea of outdoor recreation. Present article of Roberson and Babic. Go outside for recreation. SDL - read some article about outdoor recreation - present both in class next week. What is a theory of outdoor recreation? Know for exam: recreation, leisure, play, outdoor recreation. Benefits. Recreation and leisure around the world. Go over class outline and handout. Be clear about expectations of class. Definition of terms. Be able to discuss these terms by next week. Bring list of terms to hand in. White paper. 3. Third week. Presentations about leisure and about outdoor recreation. Discussion of play. (Chapter 10 of Goodale and Godbey). Leadership and its role in recreation and leisure. Presentation of servant leadership. Plan class research project. Each student conduct 10 surveys. White paper. 4. Fourth week. Present survey findings. Current theory in recreation and leisure. Flow (Csikszentmihalyi, Material from Kleiber's class), Serious Leisure (Stebbins), and Learning Leisure (My document on Leisure Learning and Learning Wellness also Chapter 9 in Goodale and Godbey). White paper. 5. Fifth week. a. Recreation in nature. (My document and research on hiking and walking on Medvednica.) Include Nature writers - Thoreau, Emerson, Muir, author of Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold. b. The role of contemplation and religion in leisure. (Philosophy of Pieper, discuss church, personal spirituality, and religious tradition, the Sabbath.) Work and leisure, philosophy of de Grazia. Five students present paper. White paper. 6. Sixth week. Constraints and Barriers to Recreation and Leisure. (Chapter 12, deviant leisure, 13, 14 Goodale and Godbey.) Five students present paper. Give take home final exam. White paper.

Learning outcomes
The students will learn practical aspects of recreation and leisure philosophy. Students will understand more about the foundation of recreation and free time. Students will gain confidence in becoming leaders in the field of recreation and specialists in free time. Students will be able to incorporate theories of outdoor recreation, and leisure into their career. The participants in this class will explore their own leisure time and become more comfortable with the role of leisure in todays modern world. Students will read previous research and writing that Roberson has made.

CLOSING REQUIREMENTS. 1. Active participation in classes and reading of assignments (Each class you will get a participation grade). (One for each day you are here.) 2. Written homework turn in. Each class you must turn in one homework assignment. This must be your own work. 3. Make a personal recreation notebook diary. What am I learning in this class? What am I doing for recreation, leisure, play? One entry for each week. 4. Organize a recreation activity in your community. See yourself as a leisure educator. Make out a leisure education plan for this activity. 5. Class research project of recreation and leisure habits of students. Each student interview 10 students. 6. Pick one recreation activity (rock climbing, reading novels, travel) that you are interested in. Read five articles about this activity and report in class (Three of these articles must come from journals listed below) and create a recreation program/job for your country/home. 7. Meet with Dr. Roberson one time. 8. Bonus: Read one book on some topic of recreation. Can be in your language. 9. Bonus: Join one of the Recreation classes at Academy of Sports. You must choose some activity you have never done. Write an evaluation of this activity based on class. 10. Bonus: Read one article on recreation or leisure written by Dr. Roberson and write a critique of this article.
