Course content
This course offers a guided journey of reading and critical reflection on the works of four key authors in the Italian literary tradition: Ludovico Ariosto, Torquato Tasso, Giacomo Leopardi, and Italo Calvino. Its central aim is to explore the deep connection between imagination and disenchantment, between the fantastic construction of poetry and a critical awareness of literature's role. Students will develop the ability to read and analyse complex texts, placing them in dialogue with each other and within their historical, cultural, and formal contexts. Classroom activities will include close reading, examination of each author's literary vision, and the identification of reciprocal influences. The course will also address the contexts of production and reception of the works, alongside specific philological insights: study of autograph manuscripts and textual variants, analysis of classical sources, and reflection on formal choices. For each author, introductory frameworks on biography, works, and relevant literary history will be provided to aid contextualisation.

Learning outcomes
The course seeks to equip students with tools to understand the continuity and transformation of literary motifs and forms across the centuries, while encouraging reflection on the cognitive, consolatory, and self-critical functions of narrative fiction.
Students will acquire the ability to critically read and interpret literary texts, place them in their historical and cultural contexts, and identify mutual influences among authors. They will also strengthen philological skills through work with manuscripts, textual variants, and classical sources.
