Course content
1. Germanic peoples vs. The Slavs; The Hungarians in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and Early modern period. 2. Language effects of the Central European "National Revivals". 3. The development and the contacts of the Central European ethnic groups and their languages in the 20th cent. 4. Purism vs. internationalization in the Central European languages (especially in their vocabulary). 5. Derivation vs. composition vs. multiverbization in the Central European languages. 6. The role of prefixation in the Central European languages; parallels in the systems of comparison. 7. Morphematics, morphonology and phonology of the Central European languages. 8. Formalization of the structure of simple sentences in the Central European languages. 9. Temporal system in the Central European languages, (waning of the functional differentiation of the preterit, future tense). 10. Passive voice in the Central European languages. 11. Participles vs. subordinate clauses in the Central European languages. 12. Central European parallels in the syntax of sentences.

Learning outcomes
The seminar introduces the issue of the impact of a language on another language ? it summarizes theoretical knowledge, which has been acquired about this topic through the modern linguistics, and illustrates (or verifies) the knowledge using the specific languages of Central Europe. Key issues: Contact and Conflict between German and Czech and other Slavic languages in Central Europe; the impact of Czech on the neighboring (Slavic and non-Slavic) languages; "Slavification" of Hungarian; loan words, calques; Europeisms; Latin as the denominator of a cultural and linguistic convergence, grammatical convergence of the Central European languages (future tense, the preterit system simplification, reducing the usage of participles, parallels in the syntax of sentences, etc.).
