Course content
After the students get acquainted with the development of dialectology as a scientific discipline in general, with the stress put on its development in Romance or French environment, after a general introduction to the history of the discipline and its general issues (e.g. the methodology of dialectological investigation) and after the presentation of basic specialised literature (linguistic atlases, etc.), the students are informed about the functional stratification of French in France and the status, form and particularities of main regional languages and dialects of French. The attention is paid to the specific regional and dialectal vocabulary and its analysis in relation to the literary language.

Learning outcomes
The course should acquaint students with the development of dialectology as a scientific discipline in general, with an emphasis on its development in Romance or French environment.
After this one-semester course, the student will become familiar with the basics of both the theoretical dialectology as a scientific discipline and the functional stratification of French. The student will acquire a general knowledge of universal dialectological issues and about the status, the specificities and the role of the main regional languages and dialects spoken in France, including their phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical deviations from the literary language.

An active participation and a regular attendance, a presentation on a given topic and a successful fulfilment of the final evaluation.
