Course content
Cycle of lectures on the topic "laughter in the French theatre from Moliere up to the present days". Basic literary terminology and critical studies concerning the role of humour and laughter in dramatic works. Definition of humour in Aristotle, Stendhal, Henri Bergson, Bakhtin. Sylvie Richterová. Vladimír Borecký and his theory of comicality. Moliere as the author of character comedy and the creator of "black humour". Laugher in the theatre works of the 18th century: Regnard, Lesage, Nivelle de la Chaussée and his "comédie larmoyante". Beaumarchais, Marivaux. The 19th century - between the drama and the vaudeville. Laughter in Musset's works, language comicality. French commercial theatre, changes of the vaudeville in the 19th century: Scribe, Labiche, Feydeau. Alfred Jarry and his absurd comicality. Jean Anouilh as the inheritor of Moliere's comedies and Labiche's vaudeville. Comical elements in the plays of the New Theatre, Ionesco, Beckett.

Learning outcomes
The objective of this course is to make the students familiar with the most recent critical approaches to theory of the comic and their application on particular texts.
