Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the development of skills and general abilities, in the case of this course specifically on the development of the student's ability to apply the acquired knowledge in scientific activities. The course is based on the premise that students acquire the basic skills of legal research already at the master's level and apply them primarily when writing their master's thesis. The relevant parameters should also be met by the dissertation project proposal submitted in the acceptance procedure. The current experience shows that the level of knowledge of Ph.D. students at law f. is generally low in this area, and they continue to proceed in an intuitive manner during their studies without applying standard tools of modern scient. research. In this respect, law falls behind related social science disciplines such as criminology or political science. The main goal is to eliminate this deficit and to develop and enhance the knowledge and especially the skills of students needed to fully exploit the potential of the Ph.D. pr. The core of the course is the question of "how to study law", which it fulfills primarily through the introduction to the relevant methods of research. The syllabus, however, includes other, quite practical academic skills. The course (2 sem. dedicated to the methodology of law) focuses in detail on normative methods that prevail in legal science in the Czech-Slovak context. However, legal science is methodologically more diverse and, esp. in the international context, other scientific methods are applied, e.g. empirical research methods, Law and Economics or sociological methods. If students have to use foreign sources, it is essential that they understand the principles of these methods as well. Even in current Czech and Slovak legal science, these methods are beginning to be applied, but often randomly and incorrectly, and it is therefore convenient to introduce students to these other methods and their difficulties so that they can use them on the way to a correct result. It is not intended to force specific pathways for students to meet their research goal. This is also reflected in the teaching approach. At the same time, legal research must be held to the same standards as other fields, and the chosen path to knowledge must follow the current rules and dogmas of the social sciences. Students will acquire theoretical knowledge by self-study of recommended sources and materials provided by the lecturers, on the basis of which they will then prepare written assignments on selected topics. The contact classes will consist of a summary of the theoretical matter and of discussion related to it, and the rest of the meetings will consist of group analysis of case studies or submitted assignments. The students' activity will not be focused abstractly, but in relation to their preferred field of study in law (dissertation). The ambition of the course is not to influence the conception of the dissertation, but only to open up the students' horizons and make them think about how the subject methods could possibly be useful for their goals and how they should be properly applied. One of the essential skills of a Ph.D. student is the ability to pass on the acquired knowledge and skills to other students in a understandable way. In relation to the development of pedagogical skills, the aim of the course is therefore to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed to engage in pedagogical activities. After completing the course, students will be able to independently prepare the concept of the teaching unit, select teaching methods appropriate to the content of the teaching and evaluation methods and will improve their presentation skills, master methods of working with groups and managing group dynamics, incl. problematic situations. They will become familiar with basic teaching methods applicable in the legal f. and will be able to enhance their acquired knowledge and skills in practicing teaching.
Development of the student's skills and general abilities leading to the ability to apply acquired knowledge in scientific and pedagogical activities.
