Course content
The course is focused on a detailed presentation of geographic information systems. Emphasis is placed especially on practical exercises, in which students are introduced to the basics of geoprocessing and spatial data analysis for social sciences. Each exercise aims to introduce both different analytical methods and datasets. Exercises are supplemented by a theoretical introduction and practical examples led by the teacher.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic Lecture(Interpretation, Training), Dialogic Lecture (Discussion, Dialog, Brainstorming), Demonstration
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basics of working with geographic information systems (GIS) with emphasis on the use in the social sciences. Course participants will be introduced to basic terms and sources of geospatial data. Practical exercises will be used for ilustrating endless possibilities of visualization and analysis of spatial data. The course will utilize free software packages, so participants will be able to use their own laptops and continue working with the software at the end of the course. The graduate of the course should be able to successfully apply the acquired skills both in their own research and academic work, as well as in future employment.
Understanding of basic concepts and analytical possibilities of GIS.
Prerequisites
Ability to work independently on a computer. Basic knowledge of social science methodology is an advantage in some practical exercises, but it is not a prerequisite.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance, Written exam

Examination in the scope of teaching and assigned information sources.
