Course content
1. Quantitative linguistics ? categorization, sphere of activity, terminology 2. Algorithm of quantitative processing of linguistic samples ? hypothesis formulation, reformulation in the language of mathematics 3. Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce specific methods of quantitative linguistics and see some of them applied in a practical manner. These involve mostly those which are related to e.g. to frequency analysis, Zipf laws, h-points, fractal analysis of texts and motifs. Students will get acquainted with specific methods based on reading original scholarly sources. In the preparation phase, analysis of sources will be performed while in the practical phase, the method described in the text will be actually applied. Additionally, students will write papers on the results of their own research. This course is for doctoral students only. There is a possibility of adapting the course to the particular research needs of its attendants.
At the beginning of the course, students will be familiarized with methodology of the algorithm of quantitative processing of linguistic text samples. Emphasis will at the same time be put on formulation of hypotheses. Results of specific experiments will be compared to results of other methods of quantitative linguistics and will undergo statistical validity testing.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of mathematics on at least high school graduate level.
