Course content
(1) Ferdinand de Saussure, Course in General Linguistics and foundations of structural linguistics (2) Louis Hjelmslev's Prolegomena to a Theory of Language, hyperbole of structural method (3) Noam Chomsky's Syntactic Structures, generative and transformational linguistics (4) John Langshaw Austin's How to Do Things with Words, speech acts in language system (5) George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's Metaphors We Live By, incorporation of grammar and cognitive aspects of its design (6) Jan Kořenský's Construction of Grammar from Semantic Basis, safe approach to grammar construction

Learning outcomes
Any linguistic practice is based on foundations of concrete theory, concepts, methods. This course is dedicated to seminal works of theoretical linguistics of the 20th century, such as Louis Hjelmslev's Prolegomena to a Theory of Language, Ferdinand de Saussure's Course in General Linguistics, Theses of Prague School, Noam Chomsky's Syntactic Structures, John L. Austin's How to Do Things with Words, George Lakoff's Women, Fire and Dangerous Things, and Jan Kořenský's Construction of Grammar from Semantic Basis. All of these works will be interpreted in class, their argumentation methods tracked step by step, with detailed description of the reasons behind their decision for certain method of investigating language. Their handling of concepts such as language, text, function, grammar, model or system will be compared, students finding out about where the authors contradict each other and in which ways are their approaches more correct than others, which presuppositions need to necessarily continue to be associated with them. Each of the linguistic methods discussed is expedient with respect to learning about certain aspect of language, while it might not be able to see others, selecting tools such as kernel sentence and transformation, concept of function and value, language levels and units, or structure of human behaviour. The methods of linguistic will allow students to realize what they undertake in pledging allegiance to a certain concrete linguistic tradition, what can br acquired with its help and how.
