The aim of the course is to introduce students to the history of modern popular music in the second half of the twentieth century, with a focus on rock music.
Students will be able to navigate the main stages in the development of modern popular music in the second half of the twentieth century, with a particular focus on rock music. They will be able to characterise the principal musical styles and genres, identify their key representatives, and explain the relationships between different trends and developments. They will also be able to situate the development of rock music within its broader social, cultural, and historical contexts and will acquire a basic understanding of the specific development of rock music in European socialist countries. |

A general overview of the history of music, as well as basic knowledge of the cultural history of the twentieth century is expected. Moreover, knowledge of the history of modern popular music (jazz) of the first half of the twentieth century is also expected.
