Course content
1. Introduction to the Aesthetic and General Theory of Art The subject of the aesthetic and general theory of art, the relationship with other disciplines, the explanation of basic concepts: aesthetic object, aesthetic object as a heteronomous objectivity, artefact, art work. 2. Aesthetic Categories Beauty and the sublime, the aesthetic function and its relationship with other functions of art, aesthetic and artistic value, transitions from art to area beyond art (according to Jaroslav Volek and Jan Mukařovský). 3. Semiotics The introduction to the discipline and its significance for aesthetics, the opacity of an art symbol, the characteristics of art types according to used symbols, historical transformations of this approach to the classification of art. 4. Aesthetic Reception The concept of aesthetic distance, distance and contact meanings of this differentiation for aesthetics, violation of aesthetic distance, close aesthetic distance, aesthetic experience, a catharsis. The time of aesthetic reception. 5. Aesthetics in Antiquity Concepts of harmony, catharsis, mimesis, unity in diversity. Plato and Aristotle's opinions about beauty and art. The characteristic of Hellenistic aesthetics. Plotinus and Pseudo-Dionysius. 6. Aesthetics in the Middle Ages The view of beauty in the middle, an overview of main approaches, the discussion of a question of the Middle Ages perceived as a period of darkness for aesthetics, main representatives, Augustine, Aquinas. 7. Renaissance Aesthetics and Theory of Art The transformation of art and aesthetic reception in the Renaissance, Renaissance theory of art and beauty, roles of artists in theory, the transformation of society and its demonstration in the sphere of art. 8. Aesthetics in the 17th Century The aesthetic of the representatives of French classicism, their relationship with contemporary art. Opinions of mainly French and English philosophers. 9. Aesthetics in the 18th Century English school of style. Leibniz, Wolf and Baumgarten's constitution of the discipline of aesthetics itself. The peak of systematic expansion of basic question of aesthetics by Kant. 10. Aesthetics in the 19th Century Opinions of main representatives of aesthetics in the 19th century, idealistic aesthetics mainly by Hegel, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, formalistic aesthetics and its expansion by Hanslick and Hostinský. 11. Aesthetics in the First Half of the 20th Century An overview of essential styles: structuralism and phenomenology, the psychological aesthetic, Marxism, analytical aesthetics. The characteristic of approach, studied themes. 12. Postmodernism Transformations of art work and reception in postmodernism - the flow way of aesthetic reception according to Vlastimil Zuska, postmodern aesthetic theories, a social transformation and its expression in art and perception of beauty.

Learning outcomes
The aim of this subject is to acquaint students with main topics and issues of aesthetics and general theory of art, with the development and transformations of approaches toward their solution, including the contribution of crucial personalities of aesthetics and general theory of art.
Acquired knowledge: The student knows the development of opinions about beauty and art. The student gets familiar with an interdisciplinary character of aesthetics and general theory of art, and with their terminological apparatus. The student learns about regional specifics of perception of beauty and art. Acquired skills: The student is able to evaluate the value of an art work or other type of art object according to tight criteria. The student is able to interpret an art work as an expression of contemporary understanding of art. The student acquires skills in approaching general categories of a philosophical character. Acquired qualifications: The student is able to consider historical transformations in the concept of beauty of individual art types. The student is able to explain a different perception of beauty in different epochs. The student understands the essence of aesthetic approach to artistic and non-artistic reality.
