The course focuses on the development and important figures in European and American music at the turn of the 20th century and between the two world wars. Special attention will be paid to the development of musical thinking as well as the aesthetic and cultural context. Topics covered: 1. Aesthetic background of music in the 1st half of the 20th century - main tendencies: Folk inspiration Neoclassical tendencies The abandoning of traditional tonality Avant-garde versus tradition Styles and "isms" in the 1st half of the 20th century. Between universalism and national character, traditionalism and avant-garde. 2. Aesthetic background of the late 19th century music - the abandonment of traditional tonality (Chopin, Wagner, Reger, Strauss) 3. Music at the turn of the 20th century (Strauss, Reger, Sibelius, Pfitzner, Debussy, Schreker, Busoni). Terminology: late romanticism, modernism and its periodization (Dalhaus, Danuser) 4. The Second Viennese School - expressionism, atonality, dodecaphony. Important figures and works (Schoenberg, Berg, Weber and others) 5. Neo-folklorism - phenomenon, differences between folkl tendencies in the 19th century and neo-folklorism of the 20th century. Neo-folklorism in music (Bartók, Kodály, Enescu. Stravinskij). 6. Neoclassicism - beginnings and the development until the end of the 19th century Reger, Busoni, Debussy). Neoclassicism in Paris: Le Six (especially Honneger and Milhaud) versus I. Stravinsky. 7. Music in Russia and USSR in the 1st half of the 20th century (Scriabin, Myaskovsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich) 8. Music in the USA in the 1st half of the 20th century (Ives, Babbit, Cowell).

The course focuses on the development and important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century and between the two world wars. Special attention will be paid to the development of musical thinking and the aesthetic and cultural context. Lectures will especially cover the following styles: late romantic music, expressionism, neoclassicism, neo-folklorism.
After completing the course students will be able to understand and navigate themselves in the history of music of the first half of the 20th Century. Students will be able to use their gained knowledge and skills to compare the music of this period on the axiological and stylistic level. They will be able to match a suitable repertoire of the 20th Century music with the dramaturgy of Philharmonics, the Opera houses and the Chamber musicians or to establish the dramaturgy of contemporary music festival. |
