Course content
Syllabus: 1. Introduction to Academic writing - the purpose of academic writing and its features, common types of academic writing 2. Effective writing process 3. Paragraph - topic sentences, cohesion, coherence 4. Introduction - typical features 5. Body - typical features 6. Presenting argument and discussion, cause and effect, examples, definitions etc. 7. Conclusions - typical features 8. Avoiding plagiarism - summarizing and paraphrasing 9. Conventions - formal register, typical phrases 10. Conventions - reader-friendly style 11. Vocabulary - typical pitfalls, typical academic words 12. Vocabulary - collocations, synonyms, prepositions, articles, punctuation 13. Revision

Learning outcomes
The students will learn some general characteristics of writing in an academic setting that are relevant across all disciplines. They will be acquainted with the proper structuring of a text, ways to avoid plagiarism, as well as the relevant tone and language used in writing a good research paper.
Enhancement of knowledge and language skills related to academic writing - i.e. proper structuring of text, use of correct language devices for proper building of an academic text, getting acquainted with citation norms and ways to avoid plagiarism.
Prerequisites
intermediate to upper-intermediate knowledge of the English language

Written exam

80% attendance, active participation, fulfilment of assignments, passing the final test
