Learning outcomes
This one-semester optional module focuses on developing language and subject-specific skills through the analysis of authentic texts (selected extracts from ECJ judgments). The texts of the judgments are simplified to B2 level, and the work with the texts includes teaching grammatical features of specialist language beyond the level of school-leaving German, which are necessary for understanding the texts. Structured work with the texts links legal provisions and argumentation in relation to the facts of the case and the ruling. The seminar develops passive language skills - reading comprehension (various types and levels of reading comprehension) - and active speaking skills - reproducing the essential content of a judgment (interpretation of the facts and the operative part, as well as argumentation in simplified form). The course is intended for students with a very good knowledge of general German and for students who have successfully completed a course in legal German.
Students taking this course will acquire knowledge of specialist EU law terminology and develop active and passive language skills in working with authentic texts from ECJ judgments (linguistic analysis of the text and simplified interpretation of legal information contained therein). The course is based on selected sections of judgments relating to specific topics and the completion of tasks focusing on both language and content.
Prerequisites
This course is intended for students with a very good knowledge of general German and for students who have successfully completed a course in legal German.
