Learning outcomes
The optional lecture Topics from the Czechoslovak Foreign Policy's History summarizes the development and changes of our foreign policy. It begins during the First World War, when the diplomatic service was born under the leadership of Edvard Beneš. This is followed by the era of the First Republic and the Second Resistance, of which foreign policy was a part. The core of the lecture is diplomacy during the Cold War. At the end of the course students should be able to understand and evaluate the processes of development and transformation of Czechoslovak foreign policy. They should not only interpret these international relations as a series of historical events, but also place them in a global context. They will also practice teamwork and the principles of historical research, an integral part of which is the critical thought, precisely in the spirit of the motto formulated by René Descartes: Cogito ergo sum.
The main aim of the course is to introduce students from a historical perspective to the most important moments of Czechoslovak foreign policy during the 20th century. No previous knowledge is required to complete the course, as one of the aims is also to extend the general or secondary school knowledge acquired. During the course, we will not focus too much on historical data and facts, but rather on the broader / global and historical context. Part of the course is also a team project and its presentation, where students try out the research activity and its subsequent interpretation. Methodological tools they should use include: bibliographic research, heuristics and hermeneutics, resource evaluation, critical reflection, and synthesis capability.
