Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to reflect upon the history of nobility in the Czech lands in the 19th and 20th centuries. A broader context of the development in the Habsburg monarchy and in the Czechoslovak Republics will be provided. Students will analyze primary sources connected with the activities of nobility in the 19th and 20th centuries. They will be able to reflect upon a position of nobility in Czech history.
Students will gain a knowledge of basic terminilogy connected with nobility in modern period and of basic features of their development during the 19th adn 20th centuries. Students will be able to explain the causes of their clashes with the middle class, the process of their decline and transformation after the creation of Czechoslovakia. Students are able to explain the situation of nobility during the occupation, communism and after 1989. They will be able to analyze the roots of myths and stereotypes connected with nobility since the 19th century.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of historical development on the territory of Czech lands on the level of BA exam. A passive knowledge of English and German is welcome.
