This course focuses on the countries of the so-called Eastern Bloc, i.e., countries of Central and Eastern Europe during the Cold War, roughly 1945-1989. It will present not only the historical development of its members but also various topics that were general like economy, society, or international relations. This course will also try to challenge the traditional Cold War narrative, that focused on the two superpowers and neglected the smaller countries. It will show that the dependency on Soviet Union varied throughout the conflict and that even lesser actors could play an important part in World politics of the era.
After the completion of this course, students will be able to understand the historical development of the Central and Eastern Europe place them into the proper context of the Cold War.
