Made In Hollywood: American History in Film focuses, as its name suggests, on portraying American history in the film. Especially those pictures that either show a particular section of American history (Patriot, Gone With the Wind), or those that reflect the time they were created (Star Wars, Rocky IV) will be selected. As a result, it will be present in the attractive form not only the history of the US, but also the used narrative. Moreover, everything will be set in the context of a globalized world, as cinematography served not only as an instrument of internal propaganda, but also as a very important soft power in the arena of the Cold War for instance. After completing the course, students should acquire not only new knowledge but also methodological framework. First of all, they should be better oriented in the history of the United States, as during the course it will be necessary to explain the context of the creation of individual pictures and what they actually represented. In addition, however, the focus will be on getting students to know what their social role was and how they formed or changed the American historical narrative. Finally, students will learn to use film as a historical source.
The course dynamics will be such that students look at a film showing a certain era of US history at home. In the classroom, we will first talk about the circumstances of the film, but the main part of the lecture will be dedicated to the discussion about the film and the historical epoch. Subsequently, students will learn how to work with film as a historical source. First, they make their critique (Review) and then try to deduce motivation and conclusions from it (Historical Work). |
