Course content
|
Lectures: 1. Introduction to Paleolithic archeology - periodization and chronology of the Paleolithic; history of research in Moravia and Bohemia 2. Chronology and characteristics of the Quaternary period - development of the climate; Pleistocene fauna and flora; overview of quaternary sediments. Human evolution; fossil anthropological findings in Central Europe. 3. Early Paleolithic - the oldest stone industry in Moravia and Bohemia. 4. Middle Paleolithic - Neanderthals and their cultural adaptations: Taubachian, Mousterian, Micoquian. 5. Early Upper Paleolithic and the issue of transitional cultures: Bohunician, Szeletian. 6. Early phase of the Upper Paleolithic - Aurignacian, the first typical Upper Paleolithic Culture of anatomically modern humans. 7. Middle phase of the Upper Paleolithic - Gravettian, a complex hunter-gatherer society. 8. Cultural development of Central Europe after the last glacial maximum - Epigravettian and Epiaurignacian. 9. Late phase of the Upper Paleolithic - Magdalenian as the last great Paleolithic culture of Europe. 10. Epipaleolithic - main cultural traditions in Europe; Tišnovien and Epimagdalenian in Moravia; cultural groups in Bohemia. 11. - 12. Mesolithic - the development of the climate and the natural environment in the Holocene; economic and social changes in the Mesolithic society; main cultural traditions in Europe; Mesolithic settlement in Moravia and Bohemia. 13. Excursion to Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov - visit of the Archeopark Pavlov and the Paleolithic and Paleoanthropology Research Center of the Institute of Archeology of the CAS, Brno; visit of the main Gravettian sites in the Dolní Věstonice - Pavlov - Milovice settlement area. Seminars: Seminars will be devoted to selected topics from the Paleolithic archaeology, especially in the field research methods (geoarchaeology, dating, technology and typology of chipped stone industry and the industry of hard animal tissue, traseology, spatial analysis of settlements, ethnoarchaeology, experimental archaeology, etc.). The seminars will be realized with the active participation of students. Students will write an essay from the recommended literature on selected issues, which will be presented in the form of a short lecture, and together with the teacher will discuss the discussed topic.

Learning outcomes
|
The lecture will familiarize students with current state of knowledge of the Early and Middle Stone Age in Central Europe, mainly in the areas of Moravia and Bohemia. Introduction of the course will be devoted to the history of research, the characteristics of the natural environment in the quatern and to physical development of human. The main part will present an overview and characteristics of archaeological cultures in the Paleolithic and Mesolithic in the terms of chronology, geographic expansion, content of material culture, as well as economic and social aspects (residential and hunting strategies, use of natural resources, structures of settlements, arts, funerals).
Proficiency in the studied issue, ability to interpret the cultural development during the Paleolithic and Mesolithic in Central Europe, an overview of the current literature on the issue.

Basic orientation in antropogenesis and characteristics of Paleolithic and Mesolithic period.

Attendance in classes (lecture + seminar): 39 hours = 1,5 credits; study of information sources and preparation for exam: 25 hours = 1 credit; preparation for seminar (reading of assigned literature): 13 hours = 0,5 credit; preparation of an essay and its presentation: 25 hours = 1 credit.
