This course is about getting to know the epoch of the Baroque in general cultural terms as well as from a specific literary perspective. We will focus primarily on the German-speaking countries and examine how society developed in the German and Austrian principalities between the end of the 16th century and around 1760. The epoch we are dealing with therefore lies between Humanism/Renaissance and Romanticism. Since the texts from this period are linguistically quite complex, your reading list will mainly contain examples that are very short (especially poetry) or essays on specific topics of the Baroque-Enlightenment period. You will find a thesis sheet for each lecture in the Moodle materials. The written exam will consist of some of the questions from the question catalogue (3 out of approx. 20 questions) and 2 questions will refer to the texts discussed together in the handouts. The lecture does not require attendance.
