The course presents both a theoretical and literary-historical overview of the entire period, as well as examining individual key themes and motifs (the Apocalypse, the aesthetics of the ugly, utopias, the metropolis, the crisis of knowledge, the father-son conflict, Expressionism's view of humanity, etc.). At the same time, the period is placed within the context of contemporary political, social and aesthetic debates. The individual themes are discussed using selected textual examples.
