Course content
|
There is now a virtually overwhelming number of theories that attempt to explain the function and the "nature" of the metaphor. The goal of this seminar is to briefly introduce participants to the most significant theories of metaphor, with a focus on George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor Theory. This approach assumes that metaphors structure and "guide" our everyday thinking and actions, and are thus anything but a "device" limited to "poetic language." In this seminar, we will discuss the areas of metaphor that are most important to our thinking, and we will also learn about the fundamental mechanisms by which they 'work'. The texts and examples discussed are available on the Moodle LMS.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the seminar is to familiarise participants briefly with the most important metaphor theories, with a focus on the Conceptual Metaphor Theory of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. In the seminar we will discuss the most important areas of metaphor for our thinking as well as familiarising ourselves with the basic mechanisms of their "functioning".
Upon successful completion of the seminar, students will be able to: identify metaphors; analyze metaphorsboth linguistic and visualbased on the theory of cognitive metaphors; distinguish between different types of cognitive metaphors and cognitive metonymy; and present the results of their own analysis to their fellow students.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of German at least at the B1 level; prior completion of the course "Introduction to Linguistics" (KGN/1ULG1 and 1ULG2) is recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Analysis of Creative works (Music, Pictorial,Literary), Final project
Active participation in the seminar, submission of homework, a maximum of 2 unexcused absences, a presentation of one's own analysis of a short text at the end of the seminar
