Course content
|
The course will cover the following topics: The importance of cognitive cartography Methods of cognitive cartography (questionnaire surveys, interviews, focus groups, action logging, screen recording, A/B testing, think-aloud protocols, psychophysiological measurements, UEQ) History and current state of eye-tracking research, principles of eye movement measurement Experimental design Areas of eye-tracking application Use of eye-tracking in cognitive cartography Preparation, execution, and evaluation of eye-tracking experiments (Tobii, GazePlotter) Statistical analysis of eye-tracking data, eye-tracking metrics Mobile eye-tracking glasses and analysis of real-world data

Learning outcomes
|
The course provides a comprehensive introduction to cognitive cartography, with a focus on how people perceive, interpret, and use maps and other spatial visualizations. Particular attention is paid to cognitive processes involved in map reading, user behaviour, and methods for evaluating cartographic products. The presented concepts provide a theoretical basis for practical exercises and the semester project. The topics are designed to enable students to apply the acquired knowledge in practical cartographic and geovisualization tasks.
The student will acquire the knowledge required to design, conduct, and evaluate research in cognitive cartography. An important part of the course is the acquisition of fundamental theoretical and methodological principles, which the student subsequently applies in practical tasks focused on the perception, interpretation, and use of maps and other spatial visualizations.

Prerequisites
|
Knowledge of the basics of cartography. Knowledge of the process of cartographic creation (map design) in GIS software.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Seminar Work
The basic requirements are knowledge of the fundamentals of cartography and GIS and the ability to complete assigned work using the knowledge and skills acquired during the course.
