Course content
|
The course is structured into five thematic blocks. The first block introduces students to geography as a scientific discipline and explains the logic of scientific knowledge (induction, deduction, theory, model). The second block focuses on formulating the research problem, setting objectives, research questions and hypotheses, and working with academic literature including citation practices. The third block presents the stages of the research process and basic types of research design. The fourth block compares quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research approaches and develops understanding of methodological triangulation. The fifth block covers geographical data - types, quality, and an overview of data collection methods in geography. The course includes practical exercises in Microsoft Excel.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the fundamentals of scientific knowledge and geographical research. Students will gain an overview of the research process, learn to formulate a research problem, objectives and research questions, navigate basic types of research approaches, and understand the differences between quantitative and qualitative research. The course also provides a methodological foundation for follow-up courses and develops practical data skills using Microsoft Excel.
Upon completing the course, the student: - explains the nature of scientific knowledge and distinguishes scientific approaches from everyday knowledge, - identifies a research problem and formulates research objectives, questions, and hypotheses, - navigates the basic types of research design (exploratory, descriptive, explanatory), - distinguishes between quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research approaches and justifies their choice based on the research question, - searches for, evaluates, and correctly cites relevant academic sources, - describes basic types of geographical data and methods of their collection, - works with basic functions of Microsoft Excel for data processing.

None. This is an introductory methodology course for geography students.

|
Mark, Written exam
Continuous completion of practical assignments and their submission by the specified deadlines. Knowledge within the scope of the lectures and the recommended literature.
