Course content
|
Fundamental terminology, the origins and evolution of regional development. The significance and classification of regional development theories, key figures. Approaches and methods in regional development. Principal methodological approaches of regional development theories. Location and neoclassical theories of regional development. Regional development theories during the Keynesian era. Marxist and structuralist theories of regional development. Institutional approaches to regional policy and regional development. Regions in regional policy within the Czech Republic and the EU. Measuring regional disparities. Regional Development Strategy of the Czech Republic. The evolution of regional policy in the Czech Republic from 1989 to the present. EU regional policy and its evolution. The impact of the EU on the regional policy of the Czech Republic, EU Structural Funds, Regional Operational Programmes. The role of Local Action Groups (LAGs) in rural development, Strategies of Community-Led Local Development (CLLD). Integrated approaches in the Czech Republic after 2013. Integrated Territorial Investments (ITI), Integrated Territorial Development Plans (ITDP).

Learning outcomes
|
The main objective of the course is to familiarise students with the theoretical concepts and practical tools of regional development, focusing on the reduction of regional disparities. Students will understand the evolution, current state, and impact of the regional policy of the Czech Republic and the European Union on the socio-economic development of specific territories (municipality, region).
The graduate is able to critically analyse current regional disparities in the Czech Republic and EU, and to evaluate the impacts of ongoing structural changes on the territory. Furthermore, they can apply appropriate regional policy tools to address the developmental challenges of a region and are proficient in navigating the systems of European structural funds.

Prerequisites
|
Students are expected to possess advanced proficiency in GIS, a fundamental familiarity with geographical concepts and terminology, the ability to comprehend academic literature, and a knowledge of the principles of academic ethics. Prior experience with scientific methodology is advantageous, though not strictly essential for the successful completion of the course.
