Course content
|
This course focuses on the economic basis of the location of activities within a city, selected market structures, urban sustainability, the impact of the current economic transformation on cities, municipal finance, investment development, and local economic development. The course also examines in greater detail the fundamentals of municipal policy theory, the formulation of political strategies, and local-level planning. Main topics: introduction to municipal economics and policy, terminology; the economics of the location of administrative activities; the economics of housing location; the real estate market; local finances, public investment, and construction; sustainable urban development; economics in urban planning; urban marketing; principles of municipal policy; municipal policy in the Czech Republic.

Learning outcomes
|
The course presents basic knowledge of municipal economy and municipal policy, and topical economic and political processes in cities.
Graduates are able to critically analyse current approaches to urban management and assess the impact of ongoing economic, social, and environmental changes on how cities function. At the same time, they can apply appropriate municipal policy tools to address specific problems and understand municipal financial systems.

Prerequisites
|
Students are expected to have a fundamental familiarity with geographical concepts and terminology, the ability to comprehend academic literature, and a knowledge of the principles of academic ethics. Prior experience with scientific methodology is advantageous, though not strictly essential, for the successful completion of the course.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Written exam, Student performance
Requirements for course credit: active participation in seminar discussions, presentations, and discussions on selected topics in urban management. Exam requirements: knowledge of the material covered in the lectures and the assigned reading.
