Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course "Qualitative Methods in Geographical Research" is to provide students with a foundational understanding of the theoretical starting points, methodology, and practical applications of qualitative research in geography. Whereas quantitative approaches help to reveal spatial patterns and statistical dependencies, qualitative methods facilitate an understanding of the deeper meanings, motivations, and processes that shape human spatial behaviour and form the cultural and social landscape. The primary objective of the course is to equip students with the competencies required to independently design, carry out, and evaluate their own research project. Students will acquire a core set of qualitative data collection techniques and their respective methods of analysis. Particular emphasis is placed on developing critical thinking in the interpretation of collected data and the application of appropriate analytical procedures.
The students will gain the ability to independently design, carry out, and reflect qualitative geographical research using particular methods. Furthermore, they will acquire practical skills in coding and interpreting collected data.

Prerequisites
|
This course requires the prior completion of first-year introductory courses. Students are expected to possess a fundamental familiarity with geographical concepts and terminology, the ability to comprehend academic literature, and a knowledge of the principles of academic ethics. Prior experience with scientific methodology is advantageous, though not strictly essential for the successful completion of the course.

Regular class attendance, presentation of a course work in the form of an independent research project, and a written examination.
