Course content
|
The course will cover the following topics: historical GIS and source materials, cartographic sources and their digitisation and georeferencing methods, historical land use and the challenges of interpreting sources, combining sources using the example of retrograde landscape reconstruction, processing LiDAR data, identifying relics of the historical landscape, historical place names in the landscape and their changes.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide students with practical experience of using historical sources within the context of geographical information systems. The course focuses primarily on the use of spatial information from old (archival) maps and historical cadastral records in combination with contemporary geodata, including lidar data.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to collect, analyse and interpret historical sources that are suitable for processing within a geographical information system (GIS). Using these sources, students will then be able to monitor changes in the landscape, map historical landscape features and identify stable and valuable parts of the landscape.

Prerequisites
|
A basic knowledge of historical geography and the use of GIS software at the level of a graduate of a bachelor's degree programme in geography.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Final project
Active participation in seminars (one absence permitted), and the submission of a seminar project comprising individual analyses for a specific municipality, to be carried out during the seminar itself.
