The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the spatial aspects of how financial systems operate on both a global and regional scale. Students will gain an understanding of the geographical organisation of financial markets, banking, capital flows and financial centres. Attention will be paid to the impact of financial processes on regional development, globalisation, economic integration and sustainable development. The course develops students' ability to analyse the spatial context of financial activities and interpret their impact on the socio-economic development of a region.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: - explain the basic principles governing the functioning of the global financial system and its spatial organisation; - describe the main global and European financial centres and their significance; - analyse the geographical distribution of banking and financial institutions; - interpret the spatial aspects of capital flows and foreign direct investment; - assess the impact of financial processes on regional development and economic inequalities; - use statistical and cartographic data in the analysis of financial-geographical phenomena; - critically evaluate current trends in the globalisation of financial markets and their impact on territorial development.
