Course content
|
The course is structured as a series of specialist lectures and discussions with practitioners. The topics are regularly updated in line with current societal needs and professional trends. They typically include: 1. The application of geography in public administration and commercial area. 2. Regional development and strategic planning. 3. Spatial planning and urban development. 4. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in practice. 5. Remote sensing and geodata. 6. Environmental protection and adaptation to climate change. 7. Transport, mobility and logistics. 8. Demographic and socio-economic analyses. 9. Tourism and destination management. 10. The business sector and the commercial use of geographic data. 11. Project management, grant opportunities and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to practitioners in the field, thereby enabling them to compare their theoretical knowledge with the practical experience of experts. Through these experts, students will be able to familiarise themselves with current topics and events relating to their field of study, which will allow them to gain a deeper understanding of the context of political, regional, economic and cultural spatial linkages. The experts will endeavour to explain the practical aspects of the processes and activities carried out in the following areas: 1. Regional policy and regional development, 2. Public administration, 3. Spatial planning, 4. Nature and landscape conservation, 5. European institutions, 6. Cartography and GIS.
Upon successful completion of the module, the student: - is able to critically reflect on the experiences of practitioners and link them to the theoretical knowledge acquired during their studies; - understands the practical application of geographical knowledge, methods and geoinformation technologies in addressing real-world social, environmental and regional issues; - is familiar with the career opportunities available to geography graduates in public administration, the private sector, non-profit organisations and academia; - identifies current trends and challenges in various fields of geography and regional development.

Prerequisites
|
This course builds on previous theoretical modules, in which students acquire a foundation in geography that they will then develop further through practical sessions led by experts.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Essay
Requirements for credit: active participation by students and the completion of an essay on a topic chosen by the students, based on the lectures attended.
