Course content
|
The course deals with the following topics: instruments and methods used in hydrology (rain gauges, limnigraphs, flow meters); the rainfall-runoff process in a catchment (interception, infiltration, surface and subsurface runoff, base flow); groundwater in the territory of the Czech Republic (types of aquifers, hydrogeological zones, the relationship between surface water and groundwater); the regime of extreme flows - floods and droughts; flood protection and the significance of landscape structure for water retention (technical and nature-based measures, stream restoration).

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to deepen students' knowledge of hydrology and to develop their ability to work independently with basic hydrological data and background materials related to the rainfall-runoff process in the landscape. The course has a practical orientation, focusing on instruments and methods of hydrological data collection, on understanding how rainwater circulates within a catchment and the role played by groundwater, and on hydrological extremes (floods and droughts), including flood protection measures and the significance of landscape structure for water retention.
On successful completion of the course, the student will be able to apply theoretical knowledge of hydrology to the analysis of real hydrological phenomena and processes within a catchment, to work with and interpret basic hydrological instruments and data, and to critically assess flood protection options in relation to landscape structure. On completion of the seminar of the course Applied Hydrology, the student: - explains the principle and purpose of basic hydrological instruments (rain gauge, limnigraph, flow meter). - describes and explains the individual phases of the rainfall-runoff process in a catchment (interception, infiltration, surface and subsurface runoff, base flow) and their mutual relationships. - characterises the types of groundwater and the basic hydrogeological division of the territory of the Czech Republic, and explains the relationship between groundwater and base flow in streams. - distinguishes between the individual types of floods and droughts and explains how hydrological extremes are expressed and assessed. - compares technical and nature-based flood protection measures and assesses their relationship to landscape structure and its retention potential. - applies the acquired knowledge when working on assigned tasks using real or model data from a specific catchment.

Knowledge within the scope of general geographical disciplines of the bachelor study of geography.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Seminar Work
The course is completed with course credit (zápočet). Course credit (zápočet) for the seminar will be awarded upon fulfilment of the following conditions: - attendance at the seminar according to the instructor's requirements, - completion of assigned tasks focused on independent work with hydrological data and phenomena and the first on instruments and the rainfall-runoff process, the second on hydrological extremes and flood protection, - preparation and submission of a review of the book.
