Course content
The first text, Phaed. 96a-102a, shows the insufficientcy of the philosophical method of the presocratics, the necessity of the hypothesis of Forms, and, in its conclusion, it contans a hint at the doctrine of the Principles. The second text, the so-called Image of the Sun from the end of the 6thbook of the Republic, is the most explicit exposition of the Idea of the Good in Plato´s oevre. The third text, the so-called speech of Socrates/Diotima, is the most important passage in Plato´s work dealing with the Idea of Beauty, the relationship between Beaty and Goodness, and love as the power which elevates human beings to these Ideas.
