Course content
1. Ancient Greece roots of European literature 2. Genres and poetics of medieval literature; heroic epics 3. Genres and poetics of renaissance literature 4. Shakespeare 5. Genres and poetics of baroque literature, Metaphysical poets 6. Literary theory of classicism; French classical drama 7. The birth of novel in England in the 18th century. English the 18th century literature 8. Genres and poetics of the 18th century literature, enlightenment, literature of sentimentalism 9. Epistolary novel

Learning outcomes
Essential history of European literature from ancient Greece to the end of the 18th century. The emphasis is given on the changes of thinking of literature, on transformations of literary genres and historical specifics of poetics. Monografic lectures are devoted to the most important writers.
The essential knowledge of European fiction, works, authors and periods.
Prerequisites
Literature 1 is basic lactures for student of the 1st year.
