The Theatricality of Protest in France 1968 Lecturer: Hanna Huber, Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies, University of Vienna (hanna.huber@univie.ac.at) The course explores the theatricality of protests in France in 1968. It focuses on three cases to analyze and illustrate relation between theatre and politics: - the occupation of the Théâtre Odéon in Paris during the student revolts of May 68. - the performance ban of the amateur acting company Chene Noir and the consequent protests against state-imposed censorship, - the performance "Paradise Now" by the Living Theatre at the Festival d'Avignon in July 1968.

The course explores the theatricality of protests in France in 1968. It focuses on three cases to analyze and illustrate relation between theatre and politics in context of May 68. The aim of the course is to understand relations between politics, theatre and performance, revolt, democracy and censorship.
Student will understand relations between theatre and politics in France in 1960s, will be able to analyze theatricality as a medium of protest and relations between theatre, revolt, democracy and censorship. Students will practice and deepen their ability to speak and write in English.

Analýza výkonů studenta, Seminární práce
Written assessment - an essay will be sent to the lecturer till the end of October 2022. Compulsory participation in classes.
