Learning outcomes
This course will introduce students to the artistic and literary style of surrealism through the eyes of a poet, photographer and scholar. An analysis of his own work will focus on the defining structural and rhetorical principles that inform a poetics, which insists on aesthetic playfulness, ideational openness and on the power of imagination as the inexhaustible tools of criticism aimed at a pseudo-modern society drunk on consumerism. If poetic translation is by definition a creative gesture, then what all comes into play when the bilingual author is his own translator? At the end, students will try out what they have learned by composing and translating their own poetic texts, images or performances.

Prerequisites
The course assumes mandatory attendance and discussion in combination with assigned readings in the form of critical essays and original texts.
