Course content
The fact that a story reflects its context of narration is known for a long time. However, our attention is usually focused on thematic level. Narratology could show us how deeply in the structure of the text are encoded the assumptions of the context. It also shows us that this deep level might be the one thing that influences the context, as well as the subject of our research and the way we treat it. It may even influence the world in its form, in which it becomes the result of our cognitive process. The place of narratology is not in literary theory only. It seems that this discipline is ready to become a methodological correction for cognitive analysis in significant number of scientific disciplines. After all, from narratology stems not only the distrust of totalitarian concepts of historiography (as Hayden White shows), but also current economic prognosis and, for example, also the deconstructivistic claim for abolition of safe harbors of our interpretations, which refers to human alienating need of transparent sense. The difference between story and narration is a difference which uncovers the function and usage of culturally conditioned axiological systems. Activity of cognitive frames which influences our cognition and communication is revealed in the difference between a fact and its implementation into the structure. This course will focus on these differences and on basic categories of narratology.

Learning outcomes
This course provides students with basic overview of methods and possibilities of text analysis, as well as with an overview of ways, which are used in text to distribute meaning. The analysis is focused on narrative texts, both fiction and factual.
