Course content
The course will cover several topics in reading and writing. Students will be required to read articles in English and to write their own texts, both longer and shorter. The workshops will focus on writing and reading from a practical point of view, with emphasis on understanding how and why we write and producing texts. We will also look at the general aims of academic writing and what it means as well as how to achieve an acceptable level. The course is divided into six lessons / workshops. The schedule is: Winter semester: 5.10, 19.10, 2.11, 16.11, 30.11, 14.12 Summer semester: 22.2, 8.3, 22.3, 5.4, 26.4, 10.5 The schedule may be subject to change.

Please note: This course is for PhD students only! In today's globalized world, foreign languages are becoming more and more important. A modern researcher needs to be able to both absorb and produce material in English. The aim of the course is to improve the students' ability to express themselves in writing as well as to improve their reading skills. Focus lies on academic texts, both in writing and reading. Please note that this course focuses specifically on academic writing. Those who want to study Academic English from a wider perspective are recommended KAL/93AE or KAL/93IAE.
Taking part of the course means the students will train their abilities to read and write English, with focus on the academic environment. They will be able to write texts independently, absorb more advanced texts written in English, and use the English language in their further studies. The students will be able to work independently with English sources.
