The candidate?s ten-minute presentation of their doctoral project must include: title and overall theme of the project (possibly if the candidate?s work is part of a team project); background of the presented theme (who dealt with it before, when, from what point of view, etc.); what is the main question which the thesis wishes to be an answer to; what method(s) of research is/are used (analysis, synthesis, comparison, statistics, etc.); what materials are used in the candidate?s research project and during their thesis writing (visual sources, written sources, recordings, etc.); what the candidate?s project brings new to the presented subject and to the respective discipline; summary of the 30 to 50-page original English subject-related text chosen for the viva and how this text relates to their theme of study. This presentation may include a short discussion with the examiner(s) and with the other doctoral students present on the theme of their research. The candidate is supposed to present his/her project and the academic text submitted without reading notes or using a powerpoint programme. In the following part of the examination, each candidate will be asked to read passages from the original English text which he/she has chosen for the viva, to translate into Czech or summarize/explain the passages in English, to answer questions related to the grammar and vocabulary encountered in the respective passage. The candidate will also be dictated a few sentences chosen by the examiners from the overall English text, which he or she will have to write down; after the dictation, the candidate will be asked to write a short text in English on their doctoral project and/or their personal comment related to the subject-related text as a whole.
