Learning outcomes

The course Modern English develops students' understanding of the main features and developments of English in the modern period, thereby strengthening their disciplinary knowledge in linguistics (1.1). Through topics such as the historical development of Modern English, standardization, prescriptivism, variation, textuality, cohesion, coherence, functional sentence perspective, informativity, schemas, scripts, and intertextuality, students acquire a systematic understanding of how present-day English functions at grammatical, textual, and sociolinguistic levels. This theoretical knowledge provides an important foundation for the future pedagogical mediation of language variation, standard usage, and textual organization in English language teaching (1.2). By analysing authentic examples of language use and discussing how linguistic structures contribute to meaning and interpretation, the course also encourages curiosity about language and supports the ability of future teachers to stimulate learners' interest in language phenomena (2.3). Furthermore, reflection on textual meaning and interpretation contributes to the development of students' ability to guide learners toward reflecting on their own language use and understanding (4.3).
