Learning outcomes
The purpose of this course is to introduce students into the foundations of formulaic language. At the end of the semester, the students should have a better understanding of the role formulaic expressions play in everyday language use and in developing a speaker's proficiency.
The course Formulaic Language primarily develops students' understanding of linguistic phenomena related to phraseology and language use, thereby strengthening their knowledge of the discipline of English linguistics (1.1). Through topics such as collocations, idioms, sentence stems, semantic prosody, open-slot phrases, pragmatic meaning, gambits, and theoretical perspectives on language acquisition (nativism vs. usage-based approaches), students acquire theoretical foundations that also support the future didactic mediation of these phenomena in language teaching (1.2). By reflecting on how formulaic language contributes to fluency, naturalness, and communicative competence, the course indirectly contributes to students' ability to support learners' motivation and engagement with authentic language use (2.3) and to respond to learners' difficulties with lexical combinations and idiomatic expressions (2.4). In addition, through engagement with linguistic literature and theoretical models, students develop analytical skills and responsible work with academic sources, supporting their ongoing professional development (6.1, 6.2).
Prerequisites
Students should have an upper-intermediate to advanced command of English (approximately B2 or higher according to CEFR) and basic knowledge of English linguistics, particularly in the areas of vocabulary and syntax.
