Course content
Lecture syllabus UL00: Individual seminars follow a similar pattern according to the needs of the individual groups. The last week/any remaining time will be dedicated to the areas that students will find most problematic. 1/ Introduction: Overview, Literature and English Philology 2/ Approaching Literature: Popular and Academic Perspectives on Reading 3/ Narratology: Point of View and Narration 4/ Basics of Literary Analysis: Motif and Theme 5/ Reading Literature Critically 6/ Writing about Literature 7/ Drama 8/ Poetry I 9/ Poetry II 10/ Literary Theory and Criticism: Brief History 11/ Literary Criticism Today: Critical Theory and Multidisciplinarity

  • Preparation for the Exam - 42 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The class focuses on the basics of English literaray scholarship, providing the terminology of poetics, narratology and drama. Along with the lecture, it provides an essential background for all later courses in literature.
After finishing the course, student will have obtained the basic background knowledge needed for courses in English and American literatures.
