Job in the context of Hebrew poetry. Basic problems of Hebrew prosody (Supplementary reading: Even-Zohar, "Polysystem Theory," Poetics Today 1 (1979): 287-310) 2. Egyptian literacy and literature in Ancient Israel. The "wisdom of Solomon" and the "wisdom of Amenemope." (Supplementary reading: The Instruction of Amenemope, Lichtheim, Ancient Egyptian Literature, vol.2, pp. 146-165) 3. Mesopotamian literacy and literature in Ancient Israel. Possible literary models of Job. (Supplementary reading: Lambert, Babylonian Wisdom Literature) 4. The Genealogy of the Concept of Wisdom. Personal piety in Egypt and its reception in ancient Israel. The Poetic Universe of the Book of Job I: Nature. Mythological animals and real animals. The accuracy of certain observations. The Egyptian/African background of the fauna in Job. Students will learn the basic features of Ancient Hebrew poetry, the vestiges of Northwest Semitic mythology in the book of Job, the Egyptian concept of "wisdom" and its impact on the Bible, and some of the methodologies of analyzing an ancient text and contextualizing it in the broader history of literature.
Ability to contextualize a biblical text in broader historical and literary contexts.
