Course content
|
1. Examples of Quantitative Research across the Social Sciences I'll discuss examples of student and faculty research that involve crosstabulation (contingency table) analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis and path analysis. We'll discuss lessons learned about quantitative methods and research design in terms of sampling, dataset construction, levels of measurement, and the appropriateness of various statistical techniques. 2. How to be an Intelligent Consumer of Survey Research & Public Opinion Polling We'll discuss the strengths and limitations of one of the most widely utilized quantitative research tools in the social sciences. We'll discuss survey/questionnaire design, sampling error, and coding survey results. 3. Regression Analysis: The Most Used and Abused Tool in Social Science Research We'll discuss the basic assumptions of regression analysis as well as the various types of regression analysis. We?ll note the powerful utility and predictive power of regression analysis but also how the statistical tool can be misused/abused in social science research.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is primarily aimed on Ph.D. students of the FF and PU. The course offer may be also effectively used by M.A. programs students whose research projects include quantitative approaches. The aim of the course is to explain quantitative methodology in social sciences. The course will take place in 6 hrs block between May 19th - May 23rd 2014. The exact date of the course will be announced as soon as possible. The study literature will be supplied by the lecturer.
