Learning outcomes
The seminar is based on a research-based education approach that emphasizes maximum student engagement and the principles of competency-based learning. Its goal is to provide students with an opportunity to master art-historical methodological, analytical, and interpretive approaches directly in the field. This targeted and intensive training will be based on the collective fulfillment of a specific research task consisting of intensive field research (in the form of joint student field trips led by instructors) combined with comprehensive heuristics and research. Students' work will involve addressing specific research questions and topics derived from the relevant research task. This task will focus on an artistic phenomenon, a collection of artworks, or a single selected artifact from the field of visual culture of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. This material will be the subject of systematic analysis and interpretation within the seminar, incorporating a wide range of methodological approaches from the field of art history. Students will be assigned individual tasks, but at the same time will be guided toward synergistic collaboration in the art-historical analysis of the relevant research task or topic. A key feature of the course will be ongoing evaluation, feedback, and a framework for discussion accompanying all seminar activities. The course format is based on intensive fieldwork, focused group meetings, as well as individual preparation and work.
