Course Content The course explores selected themes, trends and artists from the history of Chinese art. The first part of the course focuses on topics from pre-20th-century Chinese art that provide key reference points to understand both elite and "vernacular" approaches to artistic practice and appreciation. In the second part, participants will discover key developments in the history of 20th-century art in China, from the modernist and national painting trends at the turn of the century to diversified "post-socialist" manifestations. Finally, the third part will focus on some of the most recent artistic phenomena that point at potential futures of Chinese art. Learning Outcomes Students will possess an overview of key themes in pre-20th century Chinese art and a detailed understanding of significant trends in contemporary Chinese art from the 20th and 21st centuries, all in relation to their socio-political and cultural context. Students will have practiced cultural and intercultural competence, including presenting in front of an audience, team-work, self-organised research, and in-class discussion.
