The course will provide students with a systematic overview of environmental governance in the People's Republic of China. By the end of the course, the students will be expected to be familiar with the complex factors involved in shaping China's domestic environmental policies as well as China's international role. The first part of the course will focus on the domestic aspects. Students will first get familiar with the historical background and political context of environmental issues in China (weeks 1-2) and gain an overview of major environmental issues facing China and their impacts (week 3). They will gain an understanding of the key actors, institutions, and ideological principles shaping environmental governance in China, and assess how environmental governance interacts with China's socio-economic situation and political stability (weeks 4-6). In the second part of the course, students will become familiar with the international dimension of China's environmental engagement. The course will provide an overview of the major environmental issues involved in China's engagement abroad, with a focus on the Belt and Road Initiative (week 8) and Chinese economic engagement in the developing countries. China's role in the global green transition from the perspectives of its technological ambitions and geopolitical goals will be explored (week 8). Finally, China's engagement in global environmental governance regimes will be discussed with a specific focus on global climate action (weeks 9-10). The course will conclude with a reflection on the insights gained and a discussion of future challenges (week 12). The regular classes will consist of a 60-minute-long lecture, followed by a 30-minute-long seminar, featuring discussions over the studied topic and specific in-class tasks. Moreover, two classes (week 6 and week 11) will be specifically dedicated to student presentations.

Evaluation methods Mid-term test (20 %) - The mid-term test will be in a written form and will test whether students have acquired the required factual basis in the first part of the course. It will consist of 10 multiple-choice questions. Presentation (30 %) Students will prepare a presentation on a topic of choice, selected in consultation with the teacher. Two classes will be dedicated specifically to student presentations, one in mid-semester and one at the end of the semester. Presentations should be max 10 pages, including the list of references as a separate page. They should include a combination of written text, charts, and visualisation. The presentations should focus on presenting the topic in a succinct way with the help of visual aids and should not consist purely of text. Presentations need to be sent via email by 18:00 on the day before the class where it will be presented. The presentation should take a maximum of 15 minutes. The presentation will be followed by questions from the teacher and discussion with other students. Final exam (30 %) - The final exam will be conducted in class, consisting of three open-ended questions, each requiring a few sentences as the answer. The evaluation will consider the factual accuracy and quality of analytical reasoning. Taking part in the mid-term and final exams is compulsory. In case of exceptional circumstances, a make-up option for mid-term exam can be arranged with the teacher, provided an advanced notice by the student. Class activity (20 %) - Students are expected to participate in classes and actively join the discussions. Familiarity with the compulsory reading material for each class is expected.
