Course content
1. Conflicts, methods of conflict resolution 2. Mediation, principles of mediation 3. Communication techniques 4. Process of mediation 5. Mediation participants, their roles and relationships 6. Roles and tasks of the mediator 7. Process of mediation 8. The mediation process 9. Areas of application of mediation and their specifics 10. Legal aspects of mediation 11. System of mediation services Each topic will be conducted in an interactive training form.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to promote and develop practical mediation skills, mediation knowledge and interdisciplinary cooperation skills in dispute resolution. If interested, they can continue with Mediation Clinic 2, which is already focused on providing mediation in real cases. The main core of the course is to provide students with integrated mediation training and equip them with the competencies to actually conduct mediation. Evaluation of activities and developmental self-reflection will be an important part of the training. The course assumes cooperation with the Student Legal Advice Centre. Knowledge objectives: Orientation of students in the methods of out-of-court dispute resolution and their possibilities, knowledge of the mediation method, its principles, process, characteristics of relationships, application areas of mediation, ethical aspects and legal conditions of its provision in the Czech Republic. Skill objectives: Students will be prepared to provide mediation services. They will be able to establish a respectful and trusting relationship with the parties to a dispute, navigate their conflict situation and plan an appropriate course of action based on the subject matter of the dispute and their needs and interests. They will learn how to structure and conduct the mediation process, using in particular active listening and negotiation techniques. They will acquire the skill of self-reflection and perceptive reflection of clients. The course will also contribute to the student's personal and professional development.
Through training in mediation, the student will acquire the knowledge and skills to practice mediation in real cases. The student will become familiar with what mediation is, how it is characterized, what sources it is based on, and the principles on which it works. The student will be able to establish a respectful and trusting relationship with the parties to a dispute, navigate their conflict situation and plan an appropriate course of action based on the subject matter of the dispute and their needs and interests. They will learn how to structure and conduct the mediation process, using in particular active listening and negotiation techniques. They will have an overview of the areas of application of mediation. The student will thus combine theoretical knowledge with the skills of mediation. The student will strengthen his/her communication skills and his/her ability to work interdisciplinarily and as a team.
Prerequisites
Enrolment in the course is not contingent upon completion of another course or year of study.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance

The student participates in all parts of the class with the completion of assigned tasks. Introductory workshop of Mediation Clinic 1 is organized by the Department of Clinical Legal Education and Professional Skills Development of the PF UP Olomouc. It is conceived as an introductory training in mediation. Its aim is to provide an introduction to mediation and initial training in mediation skills that will be further developed in the workshops. Those interested in the course will be selected in a selection procedure on the basis of an application form indicating their motivation. The course is primarily skills-based. Students' practical performance will be the main criterion for their assessment.
