Course content
Written test (cca 60 minutes) Aim The aim of the written part is to test language competence in reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. The pass mark for the written test is 60%, regardless of the results in the individual sections. Format Reading Comprehension: Text with academic topic of general interest (rather than text for professionals) at B2 level, dictionaries are not allowed (cca 30 minutes). Grammar and vocabulary: Questions with various test tasks (cca 30 minutes). Oral exam (cca 20 minutes) Aim The aim of the oral examination is to demonstrate the ability to communicate in the general language and in the field of doctoral study. Format Introduction of the student: internships, studies abroad, publications in 2-3 minutes plus answering the examiner's questions. PowerPoint presentation in the field of doctoral studies lasting up to 10 minutes followed by a discussion. Presentations must be comprehensible for general public. Students will talk about their work with the help of brief bullet points in their presentation. Presentations must not contain coherent text which students would be tempted to read (students bring their presentation on a flash drive). Organisation, assessment and recognition of the written examination - Students apply separately for the written examination (credit) and the oral examination (exam). The written examination must be taken first. After successfully passing the written examination, the student receives credit and may take the oral examination. - The written and oral examinations are graded separately. If a student fails one part, written or oral, he/she repeats only that part. - The written part may be replaced by a certificate of successful completion of an international language examination at level B2 or above. A copy of the B2 examination certificate is handed in by the student at the tutorial.

Learning outcomes
The examination in a foreign language (French) in doctoral studies verifies the linguistic competence of doctoral candidates, both in the field of general and specialized language at the B2 level. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate in the field of doctoral studies (linguistic, literary-cultural, social-scientific fields).
By taking the exam, Ph.D. student will demonstrate the ability to communicate in a foreign language at B2 level in general and professional terms and to understand texts in social sciences.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the language at B2 level. Ability to present the Ph.D. thesis clearly and engagingly, thus demonstrating presentation skills.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Didactic Test

Students are required to attend one tutorial to familiarise themselves with the form and content of the exam and the study literature. They also have the opportunity to ask questions about the PhD examination. The number of tutorials will depend on the number of students enrolled. TUTORIALS In Stag, the dates appear as schedule events. You must sign up for one of the tutorial dates in Stag. TUTORIAL DATES IN WILL BE ANNOUNCED BY THE END OF SEPTEMBER. Students who have an INTERNATIONAL certificate of B2 or above will bring a copy of their certificate to the tutorial. Based on this certificate, they will be recognised for the written part of the exam and receive credit. Students can find up-to-date information, requirements and other materials on Moodle. The presentation must be submitted in advance (by the end of November for the winter semester, by the end of April for the summer semester): - An outline of the Ph.D. project of max. 1 A4 page (max. 1 standard page - 1800 characters including spaces, 1.5 line spacing, Times New Roman 12 font) - coherent text - Outline of the presentation slides in Powerpoint - max. 8-10 slides, including the opening and closing slides. Slides must have only brief bullet points, not coherent text. - Key terminology list: 20-30 key terms, i.e. subject-related, not general, with translation and pronunciation transcription (IPA - International Phonetic Alphabet). The aim is for the student to learn the correct pronunciation of the terms they will use in their presentation. Students may take the oral exam after passing the written exam, for which the credit will be given. Students enroll in Stag 91ADF and take the tutorial in the winter semester, but they may take the exam in the winter or summer semester. The exam must be taken before the end of the academic year. Students can prepare for the written exam by studying B2 level materials.
