Course content
The important part of course will be focused on the organization of cell nucleus, DNA damage and repair in consequence to radiation. The course brings also an overview on radiation protection and legislation of protection in Czech republic. - Introduction to composition of matter, fundamentals of physics, physical values - Types of radiation, interactions of direct and non-direct ionizing radiation, radioisotopes - Biological impact of ionizing radiation, deterministic and stochastic effects - Organization of cell nucleus - Interaction of radiation with DNA, DNA repair - Effect of radiation on genome organization and stability - Cytotoxicology of ionizing radiation - Sources of ionizing radiation - Basic aims and principals of radiation protection - Legislation of radiation protection, nuclear law

Learning activities and teaching methods
Lecture, Projection (static, dynamic)
Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to get familiar with types of radiation, interactions radiation with matter and biological effects.
Student should be able to (after attending the course): - describe types of radiation, interactions radiation with matter and biological effects - resolve the organization of cell nucleus, DNA damage and repair in consequence to radiation - list the radiation protection and legislation of protection in Czech republic.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of physics, chemistry, cell biology, genetics and ecology

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

oral exam: three questions a) characteristics of radiation and its interaction with matter b) overview of biological effects of radiation c) aims and principals of radiation protection, legislation
