The course explores the development of the Korean economy from the 20th century to the present. It focuses on significant changes in economic policies and their impact on Korea's economy during the Japanese occupation and especially after the division into two countries. The main emphasis is on comparing the economies of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). To provide a basis for this comparison, students will examine various theoretical approaches that explain economic growth and development, including the differences between the two. By studying large private enterprises in the ROK, students will investigate why economists often criticize state industrial policies for interfering with market freedom, even as many Asian countries continue to implement these policies and achieve remarkable results. The examination of export-led industrialization in the ROK will allow students to explore the theoretical concepts of open and closed economies. By analyzing the significant backwardness of the DPRK, students will gain insights into the principles of modern institutional economics.
